Talking to and talking at a person
I was having a heated with someone. Suddenly it turned one sided I barely got in a few words. Leave alone my sanity I couldn't even defend my integrity. A second time I was screaming at someone and the same thing happened and I was at the giving end.
At the end of both these arguments I realised that it was very biased. Close to venting and firing. But as we all know life can't be lived completely this way.
This is when it occurred to me that there is a something called talking AT a person.
A number of times people misunderstand what the difference there exists. Let me clarify. Talking to a person is when you are open to views. Its a human discussion. Like a debate in the most primitive forms. Two people arguing is talking to a person.
Talking AT a person is when you talk and that's the end of it. Like talking to a wall. Except the words coming out of your mouth are carved in stone to be remembered for centuries. Here are a few thoughts on it:
Being opinionated is one thing. Pushing your opinion is alright. In fact its a whole other story. There's a large line between pushing an opinion and talking at someone. It is defined by agreeing to disagree or leaving it to respect each persons opinion and sanity. Simply because each person in entitled to their opinion, here acceptance is key.
Then comes a firing. This NEEDS to be one-sided. That's the point. Here there is an extremely fine line. Which side of it the firer is on, completely depends on what they're mental make up and the situation is about. So its objective and open to argument where that line lies.
Now why would one discuss this? Simply because talking at a person has its benefits. Like getting a point across. But like everything else its a double-edged sword. Too much and you end up not getting anything through. What do you think?
